[Exclusive] The iPhone maker is ready to be the first client of TSMC's new Arizona fab. Finally, the iPhone will boast a processor that's Made in America
People seem to forget that the US defense agreements predate Taiwan having chips or even being a democracy. Arguably it started in 1945! Protecting Taiwan was never about chips!
Precisely. The US sent a carrier fleet through the Taiwan Strait in 1950, before semiconductors were invented. And again in 1996, well before TSMC was on anybody’s radar.
US support of Taiwan has always been about the freedom of Taiwan, not to protect supply chain. In fact, US helped build Taiwan’s supply chain *despite* the belligerence of the PRC
We need more and more good news like this. The CHIPS Act was/is a big deal. Please, Tim Apple - bring actual phone manufacturing over to the US, too. We can do this!
This is a big deal. But be aware that the full supply chain is still international. After chip fabrication (in this article) comes packaging, almost none of which is done in the US.
Also, a yield “slightly lower” than the sister factory is quite impressive for early in the life of a new fab.

I mean Tim’s stating facts
And in response Congress passed a law explicitly stating the US would aid in the defense of Taiwan. Do you even know US history?
Fantastic!
Out of India and China putin supportive countries (directly or indirectly) it's a good thing
This is just the CPU (albeit, it's an SOC so more than a CPU) out of Taiwan. Getting out of China is going to be slower, but 100% agree with you!

Awesome scoop tx! I'm really glad to see leading edge coming out of TSMC and CHIPS succeeding

Pretty good news
