Culpium is a Finalist for the SOPA Journalism Awards
Selection proves that small, thoughtful, and independent media have a role to play in public discourse. And you can help.
Good Evening from Taipei,
This morning, I found out that Culpium has been selected as a finalist for The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards, the most prestigious journalism awards in the region. The nomination is in the category of Excellence in Opinion Writing - Regional.
SOPA Awards, and this category, tend to be dominated by large and established media outlets; the two other finalists in my category are both from Singapore’s storied Straits Times newspaper.
This accolade comes barely six months after Culpium was launched, and stands as testament to the fact small, independent media have an important role to play in informing and shaping public discourse.
Chosen as a finalist was my November 2024 Opinion piece “TSMC Built a Bamboo Ladder. Trump Might Yet Shake It.” Written after Donald Trump’s election to president and subsequent to a lawsuit filed against TSMC for racial discrimination, it draws on the company’s history and the strange turn of events which puts Trump’s anti-DEI stance alongside a business’s attempt to hire the workforce it feels is best for its needs.
A few people have already asked how they can vote for me as the winner. I appreciate the support, but these awards are selected by a panel of peers throughout Asia. The final winner will be announced on 26 June 2025 in Hong Kong.
What you can do to help, though, is share this and other Culpium pieces on social media. Leave a comment, and encourage others to subscribe. If independent, one-man media outlets are to survive, they’ll only do so with the direct support of readers like yourself.

Thanks for reading.
Regarding the personal news I outlined in my February post; the situation continues. The adage ‘no news is good news’ is often apt, but I’d much rather some good news. In short, I haven’t much to tell you other than I am still here and fighting. I expect the extended break will continue for a while, but remain confident of a positive outcome
Thanks for your support.
Congrats Tim! Exciting news!
